Access Micro Focus COBOL Indexed Data Files Quickly and Easily

OVERVIEW

The HyperSTAR Server for Micro Focus files provides an open, client/server solution for access to Micro Focus COBOL indexed data files.

Companies can easily and quickly develop client/server applications against existing legacy data systems by using a HyperSTAR Micro Focus File Server and a HyperSTAR client with their choice of desktop tools for query and reporting or custom application development.

The HyperSTAR Server for Micro Focus works with the HyperSTAR client interfaces available in the Windows, UNIX and Macintosh environments.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

Standards-based interfaces enable HyperSTAR to deliver legacy data via standard industry leading applications. HyperSTAR provides an ODBC, C DLL (Dynamic Link Libraries), a DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) and an ad-hoc query tool for access to data in Micro Focus files. Use of standards allows access from any ODBC-enabled application or any application development environment which can call a C DLL. HyperSTAR lets application tools such as Powerbuilder, Visual Basic, Visual C++, Crystal Reports, and Lotus 1-2-3 have full read/write access to data in Micro Focus files.

Dynamic normalization allows for easy access to legacy data through relational data model. Hierarchical data is mapped into SQL tables automatically. This enables HyperSTAR to provide an ODBC interface for COBOL files without the costly reformatting of data.

Data interoperability provides easy integration of legacy data sources with other corporate information resources. With HyperSTAR, Micro Focus data can interoperate with data from other application environments where data is stored in databases such as Oracle, DB2, SYBASE, INFORMIX, uniVerse, and others.

Through support of the COBOL data model, HyperSTAR delivers optimized, fully functional read/write access to all information in Micro Focus files. HyperSTAR maps structures such as OCCURS, DEPENDS, and VALUE IS into its object system and delivers such structures to desktop productivity tools through HyperSTAR clients.

Fully compatible simultaneous access. Since Micro Focus COBOL applications and HyperSTAR enabled applications can access the same Micro Focus files concurrently without conflict, existing applications can continue running while new client server applications are developed.

Support for Micro Focus COBOL indexed data files, including C-ISAM, Level II, Variable Length ISAM and IDXFORMAT "4" COBOL files.
